REVIEW: Methodists telling their stories.
The President and Vice-President have challenged Methodists to tell our stories of faith and commitment. Their call coincides with the publication of a small book which tells 50 inspiring stories called Everyday Miracles by Stephanie Nixon (Faithbuilders Christian Books, £8.99). Stephanie tells us, “I am a 24-year-old lover of life, who will change the world.” She asks, “Do miracles still happen today?” and replies “Yes they do.”
The book arose out of a prayer meeting at a church in Birmingham. They agreed that Christians should talk more about miracles, believing that by doing so we can encourage others and give hope. Stephanie picked up the challenge and collected the stories.
Very bravely she relates the miracle that changed her life. She describes a traumatic period during her teenage years of depression, sleeplessness and anger. She and her mother prayed. “Then one day I woke up and it had all gone! I felt this overwhelming sense of peace and contentment and was overflowing with an indescribable joy.” Stephanie went on to get a Masters’ degree, is a community worker with the Co-op Group and has been a learning assistant with a university.
Many of the other miracles are along the same theme: a hopeless situation that was turned around by prayer. Depression, addiction, infertility, illness, and desperation. It is really refreshing to read the language of the “praise and testimony” meeting in a modern context, describing the same experience which John Wesley’s first preachers related as they responded to their call.
It certainly got me thinking about my own story. When I was 17 the prayers of friends and relatives turned my life upside down and I was saved from a future that could have been very dark. But why should I act as though that is the end of the story? What God did at 17 he can do again now I’m 71. And that goes for a lot of Methodists. So what’s the story? Stephanie reminds us that it hasn’t finished yet. – David Hallam is a writer, and a former Member of the European Parliament. He is now a local preacher in the Birmingham (West) and Oldbury Methodist circuit.
