We think of marriage as one of the great institutions of our society. It’s just always been around. It’s something that we all take for granted. And yet marriage is anything but an institution. The reality is that when two become one … it’s the becoming that is the hard part. The becoming is a frontier of human experience that every married couple explores, often without a map or a compass or the slightest clue as to the difficulties and challenges that will confront them.
As Irwin Lall writes in this amazing book, marriage either becomes heaven or hell on earth. Sadly, all too often, it is the latter. It’s not that a man and a woman don’t want to love each other.
