EXTRACT FROM PAUL FLETCHER’S “INTO THE WILD” TESTIMONY:
Almost 350 years ago John Bunyan wrote a story, an allegory of the life of a man searching for—what? God? Heaven? Eternal life?
Pilgrim’s Progress might be considered just a fanciful allegory or like the stories that Jesus told, a many-layered parable. It begins with a man seeing his world headed for destruction. Pilgrim is looking for an escape. He is conscious of the broad highway he is on, with everyone else around him, and tries desperately to bring this realization to their attention. He is just ignored but his dread of destruction grows. Then one day a visitor comes through and listens to Pilgrim’s plight with the solution Pilgrim has been looking for. He is directed to a gate.
Then said Evangelist, pointing with his finger over a very wide field, “Do you see yonder Wicket Gate?” The man said,” No.” Then said the other, “Do you see yonder Shining Light?” He said,” I think I do.” Then said Evangelist, “Keep that Light in your eye, and go directly thereto, so shalt thou see the Gate; at which thou knockest, it shall be told thee what thou shalt do.”
Can you see the gate to the narrow road?
Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. (Matthew 7:13–14)
